Frequently Asked Questions

  • Description text gWe believe that quality care is comprehensive and individualized.  We take an integrative approach considering your physical wellbeing, your emotional health, and what type of support you have in your life.  Sessions often include a combination of therapies including hands on manual therapies, breathing exercises, movement (yoga asana including hatha/ yin/ and restorative styles as well as Pilates reformer/ tower/ and spine corrector), mindbody therapies such as mindfulness and meditation, education about the science of pain, and health coaching.

We begin each session with a conversation which will guide our work so it is focused on the goals most important to you. We welcome your insight and ideas about our focus of the day.oes here

  • No.  You may have had a painful PT experience in the past or heard a friend talk about how painful PT is.  This is not that type of PT.  We work with your body, not against it.  We are diligently working to move your body out of pain, not teaching it how to be in pain.

That being said, some soreness or ache may appear after sessions.  This is generally something that can be felt the night of your session but will disappear by morning.  It is generally dull/ achy or feels like muscle soreness from a workout.  We often recommend taking a warm bath or shower and maintaining your usual routine to help the soreness along.

  • Simply put, pain education is learning about pain and what pain means.  Most of us are working with an incomplete or flat out incorrect understanding of what pain is.  This can be seen with the widespread use and prescription of opioids to treat pain.  Patients are at the mercy of their healthcare providers who often learned already out of date info about pain.  These old models of tissue damage = pain level are still being taught in medical schools around the US.  It is what leads to getting an MRI, pain pills or muscles relaxers before getting a referral to PT.  If this sounds familiar to you, it's because it is the more common way to address pain.

The exciting news is that the ‘new’ research over the last 25 years shows us the brain body connection with pain.  It demonstrates that when patients learn about what pain is, their pain gets better.  It reminds us that pain can get better often without the need for expensive medical interventions and testing.  We believe (because we’ve seen amazing things happen in our patients) that teaching you about your pain alongside hands on therapies and exercise will facilitate an even bigger improvement in your symptoms and ability to move out of pain.

  • Great question! Wear comfortable clothes that you could wear for a workout or walk. If you own sticky socks, please bring them with you. Please wear the footwear that is most related to your primary goal (ie running shoes for running, walking shoes for walking, dancing shoes for dancing).

  • Your first appointment will be about 75 minutes long.  We will review your medical history and talk about other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.  We will take a look at how your body moves through a series of exercises as well as palpating (a fancy word for hands on assessment) the affected areas to determine the source of what is causing your symptoms.  A thorough assessment and reviewing of goals is important so we can create the most effective and efficient plan possible to get you back to doing what you love.

If you are coming for a pelvic health specific diagnosis we will likely need to do a pelvic floor muscle evaluation.  It is common that we simply discuss this on your first visit and plan to do it in the future.  This allows you time to ask questions and feel comfortable.

Our hope is that you feel confident in the plan and know what to expect moving forward after your first session..  You will also leave with 1-2 direct action steps you can take between sessions.

  • Our approach to therapy is very individualized and all bodies heal differently.  It is hard to know for sure how many sessions it will take for you to achieve your goals.  However, we do have some general ideas from our experience working with a wide variety of people.

Most people will see us 1x/ week for 4-6 weeks with 2 more follow ups scheduled at two week intervals.  We absolutely expect that you should be experiencing noticeable symptom improvement within 4 sessions (or one month).  You should feel significant improvement in your symptoms within 6 sessions (or two months).  We regularly have patients that will follow up 1-2x/month for a few months to help reach their high function goals.

We regularly check in to assess if our plan is getting us where we need to go.  If you aren’t seeing this level or progress, you can expect that we will be considering what we might be missing and if a referral to another provider is necessary.  Our goal is to get you better.

  • Yes! Inclusive care that considers all aspects of who you are as an individual are at the heart of what we do.

  • Absolutely. We will work with you to schedule your sessions to facilitate your travel. If you are within driving distance, we recommend setting up 2 hours of sessions with a follow up every 2 weeks for 2 months. If you are traveling from farther away, we recommend setting up 3 consecutive days in a row of 2 hour sessions (6 hours in total) with a follow up series in 1 month. We will work to schedule these appointments with you to facilitate your care. We are also happy to work alongside your therapist at home so you can work between sessions with their help.

  • We are considered an out of network provider for all insurances. We collect payment at time of service and are happy to provide you with a superbill receipt to self submit to your insurance if you so choose. We do not fill out insurance paperwork or make calls to your insurance company for any reason. Even if your insurance does not cover the cost of your care, you can apply the cost to your annual deductible. You may also use HSA/ FSA cards to pay for services. If you would like to determine your insurance benefit, you can use this form to guide your conversation.

    Do you accept Medicare?

Our therapy services are NOT covered by Medicare. We would love to see you for wellness services or health coaching. We are happy to refer you to another local therapist for Pelvic Health PT services.

  • You do not need a referral to get started, but we will need a referral on file within 30 days of your first appointment. This is your responsibility to obtain. If you have recently seen your doctor for this condition, you can often call their office and request a referral.
